Arkansas State Police Defend Trooper in Goose Incident

In Cabot, Arkansas, a recent incident involving a state trooper and a goose has sparked significant online debate. The controversy began when a video circulated on social media showing a patrol car running over a young goose on the interstate. The video, which also showed two adult geese and another young one escaping, led to public outcry, with some calling for the trooper’s dismissal or investigation.

State Police Response

Col. Mike Hagar, the director of the Arkansas State Police (ASP), addressed the situation in a Facebook post on May 25. He explained that the trooper involved had spent 26 minutes attempting to move the geese off the road. Despite efforts to contact the Game and Fish Commission, no assistance was available. Hagar noted that the trooper had been instructed to shoot the birds upon arrival to prioritize human safety.

Hagar described the situation as a “lose-lose scenario,” emphasizing the dangers posed by wildlife on the road, such as sudden slowdowns and swerving, which can lead to severe accidents. He referenced a tragic 2017 incident where unexpected slowing on the interstate resulted in three fatalities.

Public Reaction and Legal Considerations

While the video has led to a wave of criticism and calls for accountability, Hagar’s post highlighted the importance of choosing human life over wildlife. He acknowledged the emotional nature of the incident, stating, “Life isn’t always fair, and it isn’t always pretty. The real world doesn’t come with a storybook ending.” Many on social media identified the birds as Canadian geese, which are protected under the Migratory Bird Act. However, Hagar’s post did not directly address this legal aspect.

The incident underscores the complex balance between wildlife protection and public safety, a topic that continues to evoke strong opinions from the community.
