Little Rock, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) announced a new statewide tourism initiative designed to get Arkansans behind the wheel and into the state’s most picturesque spots. The “Explore AR Highways” five‑trip challenge, unveiled on Monday, October 12, invites drivers to visit a curated list of scenic locations, snap a photo at each stop, and submit proof online for a chance to receive a commemorative bumper sticker and, for the first 250 finishers, an exclusive ARDOT Challenge Coin.
How the challenge works
Participants must travel to each of the five designated sites, take a photograph before leaving the location, and upload the images through an online form linked in the ARDOT press release. The required stops are:
- City Rock Bluff
- Great River Road
- Highway 7 Scenic Byway
- Pig Trail Scenic Byway
- Cossatot River
After completing all five visits, the traveler submits the photos and receives a special bumper sticker featuring one of the featured locations. The first 250 participants to finish the quest will also be mailed a commemorative ARDOT Challenge Coin, a nod to the state’s transportation heritage.
Why ARDOT is promoting road‑side tourism
“Whether you are traveling to work, going on a grocery run, or taking a road trip, you have been impacted by a transportation network that has been expanding and improving for decades,” said ARDOT Director Jared Wiley. He emphasized that the state’s highways do more than move goods; they connect families and communities to the natural beauty that defines Arkansas. By highlighting these routes, ARDOT hopes to stimulate local economies, support small‑town businesses, and encourage families to explore the outdoors together.
The challenge aligns with the department’s broader mission to promote safe, efficient travel while showcasing the state’s unique attractions. ARDOT has invested heavily in roadway improvements, signage upgrades, and safety programs over the past several years, creating a more reliable network for both commuters and leisure travelers.
Getting involved
To join the challenge, participants should follow ARDOT on Facebook or Instagram, tag the agency in their posts, and use the hashtag #ExploreARHighways. Detailed maps, recommended stopping points, and the online submission form are available through the ARDOT website. The department encourages drivers of all ages to take part, noting that the scenic byways offer educational opportunities for children and a chance for families to bond over shared experiences.
Local tourism officials have praised the initiative, noting that increased road‑trip activity can benefit restaurants, lodging providers, and retail shops in the surrounding communities. “When families travel to these destinations, they spend money at local businesses, which helps keep our towns vibrant,” said a spokesperson for the Arkansas Office of Tourism.
What’s next?
ARDOT plans to monitor participation rates and gather feedback from travelers to refine future promotional campaigns. The agency also hinted at the possibility of expanding the challenge to include additional routes and seasonal themes, further encouraging Arkansans to discover new corners of the Natural State.
