The Arkansas Department of Health has confirmed 79 cases of cyclosporiasis in the state so far this year, as of Friday. Nearly two-thirds of the cases were reported in Benton County.
Cause and Prevention
According to Dr. Austin Porter, an epidemiologist for the state of Arkansas, people can protect themselves by washing their hands and thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables under running water. Cyclosporiasis has been detected in 31 states across the country, including most of the states that border Arkansas.
The parasite has been found in fresh produce such as parsley, cilantro, snow peas, mesclun lettuce, spinach, salad mixes, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue.
