Arizona Wildcats Open 2026 Football Season at Home Against NAU

The University of Arizona Wildcats are set to kick off the 2026 football season on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. PT, hosting Northern Arizona University (NAU) at the newly upgraded Casino Del Sol Stadium. After a 9‑4 campaign that marked only the eighth time the program has won nine games, the Wildcats return more than half of their starters and are eager to build on last year’s success.

Returning Experience and New Talent

Coach Brent Brennan highlighted that the team will start 17 returners, a figure that ranks among the nation’s highest. While the core of the roster remains intact, the Wildcats will also see significant contributions from newcomers. Transfers such as former Washington center Zachary Henning and ex‑Illinois tight end Cole Rusk have already climbed the depth chart, and defensive transfers Cooper Blomstrom (linebacker) and Dwight Bootle II (cornerback) are projected to start.

The secondary will look markedly different. Junior safety Quinn Olson, a walk‑on, earns his first career start after impressing in camp, while cornerback Jay’Vion Cole and safety Gavin Hunter see reduced snaps compared to 2025. Freshmen receivers RJ Mosley and Caleb “Jet” Smith are expected to rotate in the passing game, with Smith also handling punt and kickoff returns. On defense, first‑year linemen Keytrin Harris, Kaisi Lafitaga and Prince Williams, along with linebacker Dash Fifita, should see meaningful playing time.

Noah Fifita’s Record‑Setting Quest

Quarterback Noah Fifita will start his 35th consecutive game, moving him closer to the school record of 38 starts held by Willie Tuitama. Fifita already leads the program in career touchdown passes and needs 829 yards to surpass Nick Foles’ career yardage mark. Although his Heisman odds sit at +10,000 on FanDuel, the coaching staff emphasizes winning over individual statistics.

“All Noah cares about is winning,” Brennan said. “If we’re keeping him out there for something selfish, I don’t think he’d be up for that. Our goal is to play great football every week and win every game, not pad stats.” Offensive coordinator Seth Doege echoed this sentiment, promising a game plan focused solely on victory.

NAU’s Recent Form

NAU entered the matchup after a dramatic Week Zero win over Eastern Washington, rallying from a 24‑3 deficit to win 34‑27. Senior quarterback Ty Pennington, a former Division II Pittsburg State player, threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns while adding 61 rushing yards. Defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales praised Pennington’s toughness, calling him “a savage” and “a badass” who refuses to slide.

Stadium Upgrades and Fan Experience

Casino Del Sol Stadium has received several upgrades aimed at enhancing the game‑day atmosphere. An upgraded sound system and new lighting fixtures are already in place, while a new video board is slated for installation in 2027. The university also reinstated the free “Cat Cruiser” shuttle, running every 15 minutes from Hi Corbett Field to the stadium starting at 4:30 p.m. PT, with return trips through the fourth quarter and up to 45 minutes after the final whistle.

Opponents will now occupy the east sideline, opposite the Zona Zoo student section, promising lively interactions between Wildcats fans and NAU players. Brennan expressed optimism about the new arrangement, saying, “I hope they’re wild, and I hope they let them hear it.”

Weather and Preparation

While the National Weather Service currently forecasts no rain, the region’s monsoon season can bring sudden storms. Arizona experienced two weather delays last season, including a two‑hour postponement against Weber State and a lightning pause versus BYU. Defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales noted that the team regularly practices for such delays, ensuring players stay focused regardless of conditions.

With a strong returning core, promising newcomers, and a stadium primed for fan enjoyment, the Wildcats aim to translate last year’s momentum into a winning 2026 campaign.
