Arizona Wildcats draw record crowd in hard‑fought loss to No. 9 North Carolina

The Arizona Wildcats women’s soccer team hosted top‑ranked North Carolina on Thursday night at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium in Tucson, drawing a program‑record 1,678 supporters. While the Tar Heels ultimately won 2‑1, the Wildcats demonstrated the grit and aggressive mindset that coach Becca Moros says will serve the program well as the season progresses.

Record attendance fuels a proud performance

“We haven’t played a top‑10 team in a while, and I feel like we held our own,” said goalkeeper Sofia Cortes‑Browne after the match. The record crowd, which included fans from numerous other Arizona athletic programs, created an atmosphere that the players said helped them compete at a higher level.

Wildcats’ aggressive approach paid off

Arizona chose to stay forward‑pressing rather than sit back in a deep defensive block. “I’ve said a few times how gritty they are, and I think they were gritty and aggressive and brave tonight,” Moros explained. The Wildcats kept the pressure on, forcing several chances and even threatening to take the lead when Ally Brown’s shot struck the post in the 16th minute.

Defensively, the team stayed organized, focusing on covering the Tar Heels’ tendency to cut inside from the flanks. “Carolina likes to dribble one‑on‑one from the flank, then cut inside,” Moros noted. “You have to be aware of those dribbling lanes.” The Wildcats’ disciplined shape limited UNC’s early opportunities, though the Tar Heels eventually earned two penalty kicks, both reviewed and upheld.

Key moments and individual highlights

Cortes‑Browne made a crucial early save on the first penalty, preserving a 0‑0 score at halftime. However, a second penalty in the second half gave UNC a 1‑0 lead. After a contentious review of a yellow‑card incident involving UNC’s Caitlin Mara, the Wildcats responded quickly. Junior forward Jessica Bedolla scored in the 80th minute, assisted by Lainey Swanson, tying the game at 1‑1.

Bedolla’s second goal of the season came on just five shots, giving her a .800 shooting‑on‑goal percentage and tying her for the team lead in goals and points. Swanson recorded her first career assist and added a goal of her own, moving her into third place on the Wildcats’ points list.

Looking ahead

Despite the loss, Moros remains optimistic. “The team just continues to build and build their confidence,” she said. Arizona will travel to face Dartmouth on Sunday, seeking to translate the confidence gained from this high‑profile matchup into a win.

For fans who missed the live action, the game was streamed on ESPN+. Detailed statistics are available through Arizona Live Stats.
