Arizona Wildcats Baseball Looks to Rebuild After Challenging 2025 Season

The Arizona Wildcats baseball team is facing a pivotal offseason after a challenging 2025 season that saw them miss the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since Chip Hale returned as head coach. The Wildcats experienced one of their worst seasons in decades, failing to qualify for the Big 12 tournament and suffering from injuries and underperformance from veteran players.

Program Overhaul

Coach Hale is not calling this a rebuild but rather a partial restart and reset of the program. He has already begun making changes, including the difficult decision to part ways with hitting coach Toby DeMello. Hale is now seeking a new hitting coach who can leverage the unique dimensions of Hi Corbett Field, focusing on a ‘low and hard’ hitting philosophy aimed at extra-base hits.

With the NCAA transfer portal opening soon, Hale is preparing for a significant roster overhaul. Seven players have already announced their intention to transfer, and more are expected. Hale aims to recruit players who can immediately contribute, particularly in pitching and athleticism up the middle.

Key Player Returns and Recruitment

Part of the reset involves the anticipated return of key players who were sidelined due to injuries last season, including closer Tony Pluta and reliever JT Drake. Hale is also optimistic about retaining Smith Bailey, a crucial pitcher, despite the transfer portal’s uncertainties.

The Wildcats are also looking to their incoming recruiting class for immediate contributions. Infielders Ayden Deome and Lyndon Lee, along with catchers Cooper Kruk and Francisco Rivero, are expected to compete for spots on the team.

Looking Ahead

Hale draws inspiration from UCLA’s recent turnaround, hoping to emulate their success by allowing young players to gain experience and make mistakes now, with the aim of becoming key contributors in the future. The Wildcats are focused on flipping the script and returning to their winning ways in the upcoming season.
