Arizona Wildcats add five key transfers to bolster 2026 football roster

Arizona football is finalizing its roster just a week before the Wildcats launch their 2026 campaign. While returning stars such as Noah Fifita, Tre Spivey and Jay’Vion Cole provide a solid foundation, the team turned to the transfer portal to address several vacancies left by players moving to the professional ranks.

Defensive upgrades: Bootle and Hartzog

Charlotte transfer Dwight Bootle arrives with 38 tackles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery from last season. He played in 12 games with six starts and is slated to replace the rotation of Michael Dansby and Ayden Garnes. Corners coach Chip Viney praised Bootle’s growth during spring practice, noting, “He’s just starting to scratch the surface of who he could be.” Bootle’s familiarity with a program that has already sent five defensive backs to the NFL should help him adapt quickly.

Nebraska transfer Malcolm Hartzog brings experience and leadership to the safety group. After a late‑game interception that secured a win for Nebraska, Hartzog entered camp determined to replicate that playmaking for Arizona. He arrives with 108 career tackles, 13 pass deflections and eight interceptions, and will see frequent action in the slot/nickel position, a crucial role in the pass‑heavy Big 12.

Backfield depth: Roberts Jr.

Marshall’s Antwan Roberts Jr. joins a three‑back rotation that proved effective last season. He posted 512 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Thundering Herd, and coaches highlighted his cultural fit with the Wildcats’ program. Roberts Jr. emphasized his dual threat potential, saying, “Defenses will drop into coverage, and a running back can be a valuable outlet in the flat.” His versatility should give Arizona another weapon both on the ground and through the air.

New tight end option: Cole Rusk

Illinois transfer Cole Rusk provides a reliable target for the Wildcats’ passing attack. At 6‑foot‑5 and 250 pounds, Rusk recorded 19 catches for 217 yards at Illinois in 2025 and amassed 39 catches for 507 yards and six touchdowns across his time at Eastern Michigan and Murray State. Tight‑ends coach Josh Miller praised his body control and ability to create separation, calling him a “Swiss‑army‑knife” who can contribute in both the run and pass games.

Center reinforcement: Zach Henning

Washington’s Zach Henning fills the vacancy at center left by graduating seniors. Though he did not start the previous season, Henning earned significant playing time toward the end of the year and proved solid in that role. He highlighted the support of veteran linemen Alexander Doost and Tristan Bounds, saying, “Playing next to Doost is pretty great; he’s strong and smart, which helps me learn the schemes.” Henning is expected to anchor the offensive line as Arizona seeks a powerful attack.

Looking ahead

With these five transfers integrated into a new‑look secondary and refreshed offensive units, the Wildcats are positioned to compete for the Big 12 championship and a potential College Football Playoff berth. Coaches remain confident that the blend of experience, cultural fit, and athletic talent will elevate Arizona’s performance in a conference known for high‑scoring offenses.
