Arizona State launches first bachelor’s in content creation for the creator economy

Arizona State University announced that its Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication will enroll the first cohort of Content Creation majors this fall. The new bachelor’s degree teaches video and podcast production, audience analytics, and personal branding, and requires students to grow a measurable following on a platform of their choice before graduation.

Why a dedicated degree matters

The program arrives amid a rapid expansion of the creator economy, where entire businesses are built around personality‑driven video content. Companies such as MrBeast’s Beast Industries now employ hundreds of staff in roles ranging from production and editing to finance, engineering, and marketing. Yet, until now, there has been little formal training for the non‑creative positions that keep these enterprises running.

Industry observers note that the talent pool for senior creator‑focused roles is thin. For example, Beast Industries recently posted a job for a Head of TikTok requiring six to ten years of short‑form social experience—almost as long as TikTok has existed in the United States. Brands across sectors, from Unilever to Cadillac, are also competing for the same scarce talent, offering salaries up to $290,000 for senior influencer‑marketing positions.

Industry demand drives curriculum

“Hiring people was the turning point when my work started to feel like a small business,” creator Ryan Kelly explained. Successful creators often need seasoned executives to manage growth, and those executives must learn the language of the attention economy. The new degree aims to fill that gap by providing both creative and operational training.

Consultants such as Jeremy Barbara estimate that building an in‑house influencer program can take a year from decision to functional operation. Traditional marketing degrees have not kept pace, still focusing on the classic “four P’s” and consumer behavior, leaving graduates ill‑prepared for the fast‑moving demands of feed‑based content.

Education catching up

Arizona State joins a quiet wave of institutions adding creator‑focused programs. Three bachelor’s degrees in content creation launched in the fall of 2023, and Syracuse University opened the nation’s first academic center for the creator economy last September. The trend mirrors earlier shifts in higher education, such as the 1929 USC course on photoplay that eventually led to the first cinema degree.

Beyond the university setting, the industry is creating its own credentials. Organizations like BBB National Programs are developing influencer certifications, and several countries already run formal creator‑training programs. These developments signal that the creator economy is moving from a loosely organized community to a professionalized sector with recognized standards.

What this means for students and employers

For students, the degree offers a clear pathway into a high‑growth job market that currently suffers from a talent shortage. For employers, it promises a pipeline of graduates who understand both the creative and business sides of attention‑driven media, reducing reliance on costly agency contracts.

As the creator economy continues to expand, Arizona State’s new program positions the university as a leader in preparing the next generation of media professionals, while also responding to the concrete hiring needs of brands and creator companies nationwide.
