The historic Laramie State Bank building in Austin, Chicago, is nearing the completion of its transformation into a mixed-income housing complex. Located at 5200 W. Chicago Ave., the redevelopment project is set to open its doors to residents in September, with applications now open to the public.
The project, led by the Oak Park Regional Housing Center, aims to foster a sense of community among its residents. Athena Williams, the executive director, emphasized the goal of creating internal unity within the building. The complex will feature 78 units, 51 of which are designated as affordable housing.
Community and Amenities
The development is not just about housing; it also includes a blues museum, a cafe, a business incubator, and community spaces. The first floor of the building offers a public community room, property management office, and mail room, making it ideal for block club meetings and small gatherings.
Security is a priority, with entrances controlled by a key fob and app-based access system, 24/7 locked doors, and both on-site and virtual security. Residents will also have access to a rooftop terrace and a community room with a kitchenette on the top floor.
Application Process
Interested individuals can attend a pre-application event at By The Hand Club, 415 N. Laramie Ave., starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Applicants are required to bring a valid photo ID, Social Security card, proof of income, and a money order or cashier’s check for $17.
For more information, prospective tenants can contact the West Cook Homeownership Center program or visit their office. The project’s website also provides additional details.
The Laramie State Bank building, a city landmark since 1995, was built in 1929 and has been vacant since 2012. The redevelopment project will restore its art deco architecture, contributing to the revitalization efforts in Austin under the city’s Invest South/West program.
