Apple Introduces iPhone 18 Duo, First Foldable iPhone, Starting at $1,999

Cupertino, California – Apple’s latest product event, held at the Steve Jobs Theater, showcased the iPhone 18 family and the company’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone 18 Duo. The announcement was led by Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1.

Foldable iPhone 18 Duo

The Duo features a 7.6‑inch foldable display that Ternus described as “the largest display ever on an iPhone, yet fits into your pocket.” When opened, the screen is roughly 80 % larger than the iPhone 18 Pro, and the device supports the Apple Pencil – a capability previously limited to iPads. The phone also offers split‑screen multitasking, allowing two apps or windows to run side‑by‑side for tasks such as comparison shopping.

Pricing for the Duo starts at $1,999. Pre‑orders open on September 12, with shipments slated for October 23. Ternus said the Duo will “redefine the experience of using a foldable phone,” positioning Apple to enter a market currently dominated by Samsung, Motorola and Google.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max bring incremental upgrades to battery life, camera performance and processing power. The Pro Max now delivers up to 45 hours of video playback and supports faster charging. Both models start at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively.

Camera enhancements include “cinematic effects” for video, new manual controls, and a “smart focus tracking” feature that keeps a moving subject – such as a child playing soccer – in sharp focus. Apple also highlighted new AI‑driven capabilities for Siri, emphasizing privacy and security as differentiators from competitors that have pushed AI more aggressively.

Market Context and Analyst View

Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee noted that Apple’s foldable launch follows its traditional playbook: wait for the technology to mature, observe market viability, then enter to shape the category. He cautioned that foldables still represent a tiny share of the smartphone market, and the true test will be whether Apple can expand that niche into a meaningful segment.

Chatterjee also remarked that the iPhone 18 series is about $100 more expensive than the previous generation, partly due to a global memory‑chip shortage. The iPhone 17 lineup ranged from $799 to $1,999, depending on configuration.

What This Means for Consumers

Apple’s focus on privacy, AI integration and a premium foldable experience aligns with its brand promise of delivering high‑quality, secure devices. The addition of Apple Pencil support may attract creative professionals and students who previously relied on iPads for note‑taking and sketching.

Consumers can expect the new iPhone 18 models to be available in stores beginning September 18, with the Duo arriving a month later. As Apple continues to expand its hardware ecosystem, the company reinforces its position as a leading consumer‑technology juggernaut.
