Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., downplayed her past comments on defunding the police, joking that the ‘Woke 1’ era was ‘crazy’ during an appearance on ABC’s ‘This Week’.
Past Comments Resurface
Ocasio-Cortez was asked about Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong’s controversial comments, including calling for Thanksgiving to be canceled or for prisons to be abolished. Ocasio-Cortez deflected, stating that what’s important is assessing what a candidate is saying now.
When asked if there was a point when the socialist movement went ‘too far,’ Ocasio-Cortez clarified that most of these comments were made during the height of the COVID shutdowns, when people were more open to change. She added that discussions during that time were ‘quite fruitful’ and that the way we talk about crime today is ‘fundamentally different’ than before.
The national program for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) still lists abolishing the police as a position. Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the New York City chapter of the DSA, responded that she does not agree with all the national organization’s positions.
