Antonio Brown accepts plea deal, avoids up to 30‑year sentence in Miami case

Miami‑Dade County prosecutors announced Wednesday that former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has entered a plea agreement that eliminates the second‑degree murder charge stemming from a May 16, 2025 shooting outside a celebrity boxing event in the Little Haiti neighborhood. Under the deal, Brown will receive probation rather than a prison term that could have reached 30 years.

Deal details and attorney’s rationale

Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, issued a statement describing the agreement as a “dramatically reduced” criminal charge that “result[s] in probation rather than a prison sentence.” The statement emphasized that the decision was driven by practical concerns for Brown’s family, noting that a prolonged trial and potential incarceration would have imposed a heavy financial and emotional burden.

Background of the incident

According to the indictment, Brown became involved in a confrontation with Zul‑Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, seized a firearm from a security guard, and fired two shots while pursuing Nantambu. Nantambu reported that one bullet grazed his neck. After the incident, Brown left the United States, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai in November 2025, and was extradited back to Florida. He was released on a $25,000 bond and required to wear a GPS monitor while the case proceeded.

Self‑defense claim and “stand your ground”

Eiglarsh maintains that Brown acted in self‑defense and intends to pursue dismissal under Florida’s “stand your ground” law. The attorney added that the plea agreement reflects the fact that Nantambu’s counsel recently told investigators his client had forgiven Brown and no longer wishes to pursue prosecution.

Why the state offered the deal

Prosecutors could have continued with the case, relying on video evidence and witness testimony. Instead, they opted for a resolution that avoids a lengthy trial, conserves resources, and respects the victim’s expressed forgiveness. “He is not accepting this agreement because he suddenly agrees with the State’s allegations,” Eiglarsh said. “He is accepting it because the State made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.”

Next steps

A hearing later this month will formalize the plea agreement. If approved, Brown will avoid a prison term, remain on probation, and the criminal case will be closed.

Community impact

The resolution has drawn mixed reactions. Some community members view the outcome as a responsible use of prosecutorial discretion, allowing the legal system to focus on more serious crimes while sparing a family the hardship of a protracted trial. Others argue that the plea deal is too lenient for a shooting that endangered a bystander. Local leaders have called for continued vigilance in ensuring public safety at large events.
