Anthropic Names Global Affairs Chief

Anthropic, a developer of artificial intelligence models, has named Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar its first chief global affairs officer. Cuéllar will report to Anthropic President Daniela Amodei and will be responsible for managing relationships with the U.S. government and countries where Anthropic is expanding globally.

Background and Experience

Cuéllar, also known as Tino, has a wide range of government experience, including serving as a special assistant in former Democratic President Barack Obama’s White House. He has also led the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and co-chaired a task force on U.S. national security and nuclear proliferation.

Cuéllar’s experience and expertise will be crucial in navigating the vast policy challenges and changing regulation around Anthropic’s technology, particularly in the context of the company’s recent tensions with the Trump administration. The administration has blacklisted and ordered controls around Anthropic’s AI, citing national security concerns.

AI Policy and Regulation

The appointment of Cuéllar comes at a time when AI policy and regulation are increasingly important. Anthropic has been at the forefront of these discussions, with Cuéllar having previously co-led a study that informed the passage of a California law protecting AI whistleblowers and requiring high-revenue developers to report on standards and incidents.

Cuéllar’s approach to policymaking is expected to be pragmatic and open-minded, with a focus on finding common ground with the Trump administration. As Oren Cass, founder of the conservative think tank American Compass, noted, Cuéllar will be “open-minded” to the administration’s positions and eager to find the root of any disagreement.
