Angels Fire Pitching Coach Mike Maddux

The Los Angeles Angels fired pitching coach Mike Maddux and two of his assistants on Tuesday. Interim general manager John Mozeliak made the decision, citing the team’s lack of sufficient use of available technology and analytics for pitchers.

Staff Shake-up

Mozeliak also fired bullpen coach Dom Chiti and assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott. The Angels have the majors’ worst record at 45-74. Mozeliak said the team has great resources that could be utilized better.

Tim Leveque was appointed as the interim pitching coach, and Michael Wuertz will be the club’s interim bullpen coach. Leveque was the pitching coach at the Angels’ Double-A Rocket City affiliate.

The Angels are headed toward their 11th consecutive losing season and 12th straight non-playoff season. Mozeliak has endeavored to modernize the organization since taking over baseball operations on a temporary basis.
