An Afternoon at Roxbury’s Museum of Fine Arts Annex

By eight o’clock on a Friday, the line outside ONCE Ballroom on Cambridge Street in Somerville — just over the Boston line — has maybe thirty people in it, most of them in their twenties and thirties, nobody performing excitement. It’s cold. Someone’s eating a breakfast sandwich from a bag. This is not a Vegas pre-party. This is a neighborhood music room that takes its shows seriously, and the crowd knows it.

ONCE has been through a few lives. It started as a bar in Union Square, closed, reopened, moved, and landed in a bigger space that holds around 500 people. The room is wide and low-ceilinged, with exposed brick along one side and a bar running the length of the left wall. The sightlines are good nearly everywhere. The sound system is better than it has any right to be for a venue at this price point — the kind of mix where you can actually hear the bass guitar and the snare as separate things, not one muddy smear.

Tickets for most shows run $15 to $30 in advance, sometimes a bit more for touring acts with real draw. The night I went, it was an indie rock band from Chicago making their first run up the East Coast. The opener was local, three-piece, louder than expected, and genuinely good. The crowd filled in by nine, drinks in hand, nobody shoved against the stage. There’s room to breathe here, which is rarer than it should be.

The bar is cash-friendly and the selection is straightforward — a few local drafts, standard cocktails, canned seltzers if that’s your thing. Prices are honest: $7 for a beer is about right for Somerville in 2024. The bartenders move fast and don’t chat you up when you don’t want it.

What makes ONCE worth going out of your way for is the booking. The calendar covers a lot of territory — experimental jazz, punk, folk, metal, ambient electronic — without feeling scattershot. Somebody makes considered decisions about what goes on that stage, and you can tell. Regional acts play alongside national touring artists, and the local stuff gets taken as seriously as the out-of-towners. It’s the kind of venue where you’ll occasionally catch something you didn’t expect to care about and end up staying for the whole set.

The neighborhood helps. Union Square has enough bars and restaurants within walking distance that you can eat beforehand without rushing. Take the Green Line extension to Union Square station and you’re four minutes away on foot. Parking exists but on a Friday it’s not worth the stress.

By the time the headliner finished their last song around eleven-fifteen, the crowd filed out without the usual crush. People stood on the sidewalk talking, not ready to leave but not making a production of it either. A few went back inside for another beer. The band was loading gear into a van double-parked on Cambridge Street.

ONCE doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is: a solid, well-run music room in a part of the city that’s grown enough to support one. That’s enough. It’s more than enough.
