Providence commuters were hit with extensive train delays Monday night as Amtrak reported multiple Acela and Northeast Regional services running far behind schedule along the Northeast Corridor. The disruptions affected riders traveling between Boston, New York and Washington, with several trains serving Rhode Island experiencing delays of four to eight hours.
Key delayed trains
At approximately 9 p.m., Acela Train 2148, traveling northbound from Washington to Boston, was listed as 6 hours 35 minutes late as it approached Providence. Two southbound Northeast Regional trains heading toward Westerly also suffered lengthy setbacks: Train 1165 was 4 hours 37 minutes late, while Train 1167 was delayed by 3 hours 31 minutes.
Further down the line, Northeast Regional Train 1087, bound for Norfolk from Boston, was nearly eight hours behind schedule as it approached Stamford, Connecticut. Train 1135, traveling from Boston to Washington, was reported to be almost six hours late near New London, Connecticut.
Cause of the disruption
Amtrak identified a power issue affecting Acela Train 2150 near Mystic, Connecticut. The railroad confirmed the train arrived at New London after the problem was resolved and noted that customers were being accommodated on alternate trains as space allowed.
During the delay, Amtrak crews provided beverages on board and delivered additional water to passengers. The company’s statement did not elaborate on whether the Mystic power issue contributed to the broader schedule disruptions.
What riders can do
Passengers are encouraged to check the latest arrival estimates on Amtrak’s live‑tracking map, which continues to show real‑time updates for each affected service. Those with tickets on delayed trains should contact Amtrak customer service for rebooking options or refunds where applicable.
While some services on the corridor were listed as on time, the overall picture Monday night highlighted the vulnerability of the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor to technical setbacks. Amtrak has not yet announced a timeline for fully restoring normal schedules.
