Why the drive matters
Carmen Watkins, CEO of the Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region, explained that the region is emerging from a summer‑long blood shortage that nearly became a crisis. “When you start talking about blood of color, there’s always these issues: leukemia, sickle cell, lupus, the like, that impact these entire populations more than others,” Watkins said. “We want to not only salute Hispanic Heritage Month, but also identify blood types that save lives.”
Type O blood, especially the universal donor type, is critical because it can be transfused to any patient regardless of blood type. Michael Joseph Panarella, a board member of the American Red Cross of Houston, noted that roughly 60 % of Hispanics and Latinos carry universal Type O blood, making this community a vital source for lifesaving donations.
Community participation
The event featured the Klein‑Collins Mariachi Band, which serenaded donors with regional Mexican folk music. “I just think it’s an amazing experience, playing for people donating blood, especially for Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Christopher Vicente, a senior member of the band. “It’s a very awesome experience being able to share music with people, sharing our culture.”
Panarella added, “Today… we wanted to take cultural pride, as we call it, and turn it into lifesaving action.” The Red Cross described the effort as “pushing hard” to secure more Type O donations, a call that resonates with the 46 % of Harris County residents who identify as Hispanic or Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
