American Kate Douglass broke the women’s 50 meters freestyle world record on Friday at a US Pro Swim Series event in Indianapolis. The 24-year-old, who won the 200m breaststroke gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, clocked 23.59 seconds to better the 23.61 set by Swede Sarah Sjostrom at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Douglass finished ahead of Gretchen Walsh, with whom she shared the previous US record of 23.91. When asked about her record-breaking swim, Douglass expressed shock and surprise, stating she was only hoping to achieve a personal best time.
