Amazon has stated it will take appropriate action against a third-party delivery partner in India after a fire at the partner’s facility killed two workers. The incident occurred on June 5 at M&M Logistics Solutions in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
Investigation Underway
A police investigation into the fire is currently underway, and Amazon has also initiated an independent internal investigation. The building where the fire occurred allegedly lacked a valid fire safety clearance, a fire alarm, smoke detectors, and a proper emergency exit.
Amazon has said the safety and wellbeing of its workers is its top priority. The company’s internal code of conduct for suppliers and vendors states that it does not tolerate working environments that are unsafe for humans, including uncontrolled fires.
Union Demands Independent Investigation
The Amazon India Workers Union has demanded an independent investigation by a judge into the June 5 deaths, calling the incident an example of a grave failure of workplace safety and protection of human dignity.
