Amazon Reschedules Prime Day to June Amid Global Events

Amazon.com has announced that its annual Prime Day sales event will occur from June 23 to June 26, moving back to June after five years of hosting it in July. The decision was influenced by major global events, including the FIFA World Cup and the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, according to Jamil Ghani, Amazon Prime’s international vice president.

Strategic Timing

The FIFA World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19, and the U.S. Independence Day on July 4, were significant factors in Amazon’s timing decision. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant believes that this timing will better serve its customers, who are likely to be preparing for both the World Cup and holiday celebrations.

Prime Day has become one of Amazon’s largest sales events, generating $24.1 billion in U.S. online spending in 2025 when it was extended to four days. This year, Amazon hopes to see similar success by encouraging members to stock up on perishable groceries and everyday essentials. The company has been expanding its same-day and next-day delivery services, which now include free same-day deliveries of perishable foods for Prime members.

Competitive Edge

Amazon’s focus on groceries is part of its strategy to compete with Walmart, the largest grocer in the U.S. Walmart’s membership service, Walmart+, offers same-day delivery in under three hours, with some orders arriving in as little as 30 minutes. This service has been instrumental in Walmart gaining e-commerce market share from Amazon.

Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, anticipates strong year-over-year growth for June, driven by expected sales and discounts across major categories such as appliances, office supplies, and home & garden. As Amazon continues to expand its grocery offerings, Jamil Ghani expects these items to constitute a larger portion of Amazon’s deliveries, reflecting a shift in consumer buying habits towards more frequent purchases of perishable and nonperishable food items.

Amazon’s strategic timing and focus on essential goods highlight its efforts to maintain a competitive edge in the e-commerce market, particularly against rivals like Walmart.
