Amazon raises minimum wage to $20 an hour for full‑time core operations staff

Amazon is taking a bold step to support the American worker ahead of the holiday shopping rush. Effective Sept. 27, the e‑commerce giant will increase the minimum starting hourly wage for its full‑time core operations employees to $20. This $1‑per‑hour raise lifts the average hourly pay for those workers to almost $24, while total compensation—including the company’s benefits package—will exceed $32 per hour.

Expanded benefits for Amazon families

In addition to higher wages, Amazon is adding new perks that directly benefit employees and their households. Starting Oct. 1, every Amazon employee nationwide will receive a 10% discount on eligible fresh groceries and everyday essentials purchased on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online, plus a 20% discount at physical Whole Foods stores. These discounts can be combined with existing Prime member savings, stretching family budgets further.

Amazon is also partnering with First Tech Federal Credit Union to offer low‑cost banking services to qualified employees and their families. The credit‑union membership provides checking and savings accounts with no overdraft fees or monthly maintenance charges, and it does not require a credit history. The rollout of this banking option will begin later this year.

How Amazon’s move compares nationally

Amazon’s wage increase arrives at a time when many retailers are re‑examining compensation to attract and retain talent. Walmart, for example, reports a $14 starting wage for store workers and an average hourly wage of more than $18.50 for all U.S. hourly employees. For its warehouse and supply‑chain staff, Walmart’s average hourly wage sits at $27.50, with a starting wage of $24.75.

While Walmart’s base pay remains lower than Amazon’s new $20 minimum for core operations, Amazon’s broader compensation package—particularly the added discounts and banking benefits—offers a more comprehensive approach to supporting workers’ financial well‑being.

Why higher wages matter for families and the economy

Raising the floor on wages helps families meet basic needs, reduces reliance on government assistance, and fuels consumer spending—an engine of economic growth. By ensuring that full‑time core operations staff earn a livable wage, Amazon is reinforcing the traditional family unit and promoting individual liberty through financial independence.

President Trump’s administration has consistently championed policies that empower businesses to thrive while protecting American workers. Amazon’s decision aligns with that vision, demonstrating that the private sector can lead the way in creating good‑paying jobs without heavy‑handed regulation.

Looking ahead

Amazon’s wage and benefit enhancements are set to roll out nationwide, with the discount program beginning Oct. 1 and the credit‑union partnership launching later in the year. As the holiday shopping season approaches, the company expects the higher wages and expanded perks to attract a stable, motivated workforce ready to meet the surge in demand.

For workers across the United States, the new $20 minimum wage and added benefits represent a tangible improvement in quality of life, reinforcing the values of hard work, family stability, and personal responsibility that underpin our nation’s prosperity.
