Amazon launches AI‑powered tool to verify official messages and curb scams

Amazon is rolling out a new verification tool designed to protect shoppers from impersonation scams. The feature is built into the company’s Alexa for Shopping service, allowing users to ask Alexa whether a recent message really originated from Amazon.

How the tool works

Customers simply provide Alexa with details about the suspicious message—such as the sender, the text, the date it arrived, and any formatting clues. Using artificial intelligence, the system cross‑checks the information against a comprehensive record of every official Amazon communication. If the match is certain, Alexa replies, “Yes, this message is an official Amazon communication.”

When the message does not align with any known Amazon correspondence, the response reads, “This message does not appear to match any official Amazon communication based on the information provided.” If the AI cannot reach absolute certainty, it advises the user to try again or to contact Amazon’s verification team at [email protected].

Why the tool matters for families

Scammers often prey on busy households by sending fake order confirmations, shipping notices, or promotional offers that look legitimate. Scott Knapp, vice president of worldwide buyer risk prevention at Amazon, explained, “Scammers thrive when customers can’t easily verify whether a message is real. That’s why we built a tool to put certainty directly in customers’ hands, in real time, when they need it most.” By giving shoppers a quick, reliable way to confirm messages, the tool aims to safeguard family finances and reduce the anxiety that comes with potential fraud.

Availability and additional resources

At launch, the verification service is available only in the United States through Alexa for Shopping. Amazon is also partnering with the Better Business Bureau to offer a searchable scam tracker, giving consumers another avenue to investigate suspicious communications.

National Consumer Correspondent Allie Jasinski tested the feature and shared a video demonstration of how Alexa responds to various sample messages. The demonstration highlights the tool’s straightforward interface and its clear, user‑friendly language.

What consumers should do

Families are encouraged to enable Alexa for Shopping on their devices and to use the new verification command whenever they receive an unexpected Amazon‑related message. If the tool cannot verify a message, contacting Amazon directly via the provided email address is the safest next step.

By leveraging AI to confirm the authenticity of communications, Amazon is taking a proactive stance against fraud that aligns with the broader goal of protecting households and preserving trust in online commerce.
