Amazon launches £4 billion sterling bond sale, draws strong demand

Amazon is set to raise £4 billion (about $5.43 billion) in its inaugural sterling‑denominated bond sale, according to a memo from the lead manager seen by Reuters. The offering, scheduled for Wednesday, attracted more than £12 billion in investor demand, reflecting the strong appetite for financing the rapid expansion of artificial‑intelligence initiatives.

Bond structure and pricing

The four‑part deal will issue equal amounts of £1 billion in 3‑, 6‑, 12‑ and 19‑year bonds. Pricing is expected to be set at spreads of 53, 75, 90 and 93 basis points over comparable British government securities, respectively. These spreads indicate a modest premium to sovereign yields, underscoring confidence in Amazon’s credit profile.

Expanding funding sources beyond the United States

Amazon’s move follows a broader trend among hyperscalers to diversify financing across multiple currencies. In 2026, these companies have issued more than $200 billion of debt, more than double the total issued in 2025, according to data from LSEG. By tapping the pound, Amazon joins peers that have already accessed euro, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar and yen markets.

Alphabet, the parent of Google, was the first hyperscaler to enter the UK market earlier this year, raising £5.5 billion through a five‑part issuance that included a rare 100‑year bond. The company has also secured financing in Japanese yen, Canadian and Australian dollars.

Market implications

The European Central Bank recently warned that the surge of hyperscaler borrowing in the euro‑zone could crowd out other borrowers and lift financing costs. Amazon’s sterling issuance adds to that pressure, but also demonstrates the depth of investor interest in high‑quality, technology‑driven debt.

Amazon’s last bond sale, in July, attracted weaker demand for a $25 billion offering, suggesting that while investor enthusiasm remains high, the market may be testing the limits of appetite for large‑scale tech debt.

What this means for investors

Investors seeking exposure to the technology sector’s growth story now have a new avenue through UK‑based bonds, which offer a blend of longer maturities and competitive yields. The strong demand for Amazon’s offering signals confidence in the company’s ability to generate cash flow and manage debt responsibly.

Analysts will watch how the pricing compares to other recent tech issuances and whether the strong demand sustains as more hyperscalers turn to non‑U.S. markets for capital.
