Miami International Airport was the scene of a tragic accident on Sunday when an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway, leaving five crew members dead and several others injured. The incident has prompted an immediate investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and sparked analysis from aviation specialists.
What happened on the runway
According to eyewitness video and preliminary reports, the aircraft touched down farther down the runway than usual and failed to halt before reaching the end. The plane, weighing roughly 300,000 pounds and traveling at about 150 miles per hour, could not stop in the remaining distance.
Michael Arizzi, an aviation professional who reviewed the crash footage, observed that the aircraft appeared to land on its nose gear and right‑wing gear while the left main gear remained off the ground. “One thing I did notice is when the aircraft landed, it seemed to have set on its nose landing gear and its right‑wing landing gear, with its left main landing gear off the ground,” Arizzi said.
Possible contributing factors
Arizzi and other experts highlighted several conditions that may have played a role. On Sunday afternoon, scattered showers and gusty winds were reported across South Florida, including Miami. A tailwind or strong crosswind can push an aircraft off course or increase the distance needed to stop. “If there was a tailwind or a strong crosswind that could have caused it to kick off to the side a little bit, or a tailwind will actually delay its landing, and then you’ll have to glide a lot further because airspeed is a lot slower than your actual ground speed since the wind is pushing it,” Arizzi explained.
John Nance, an aviation analyst for ABC News, noted that commercial planes typically aim to touch down within the first 3,000 feet of a runway. Larger aircraft, such as the cargo plane involved, require longer stopping distances because of their weight. “It’s a larger aircraft, and it’s going to need a longer distance to actually stop,” Arizzi said. “Pilots generally try to put the aircraft down at the beginning of the runway.”
When an aircraft lands beyond the usual touchdown zone, pilots are trained to consider an aborted landing, commonly called a “go‑around,” where the aircraft applies full thrust and climbs back into the traffic pattern for another approach. Arizzi suggested that this option may have been overlooked: “In other words, it’s an aborted landing. So full throttles get back up in the air, go around the pattern and try to land again. If they were low on fuel and there was adverse weather in the area, that might have been the driving decision to actually land at that time.”
Investigation underway
The NTSB has opened a formal investigation and indicated that a final report could take months to complete. In the meantime, authorities are working to identify all victims and provide assistance to the injured.
Amazon has not yet released an official statement regarding the crash, but the company’s logistics division typically cooperates fully with federal investigators in such matters.

Local officials expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged residents to stay clear of the airport perimeter while emergency crews continue their work. Miami‑Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava praised the first responders for their swift action and reminded the public of the importance of aviation safety standards.
