The driver was unable to avoid the animal, and the front of his Mercedes struck the alligator. Directly behind the Mercedes, a 20‑year‑old woman from Palm Bay was operating a Toyota Tacoma. In an effort to evade the slowing Mercedes, she swerved, lost control of her pickup, and the vehicle overturned, ejecting her onto the center lane of I‑95.
Witnesses reported that an unidentified vehicle then collided with the woman in the lane. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene.
