Allen County Approves Additional $1 Million for Vann Family Crossing Pedestrian Bridge

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Allen County Fort Wayne Capital Improvement Board approved an extra $1 million for the Vann Family Crossing pedestrian bridge on Thursday, a move aimed at narrowing a budget gap that emerged after construction bids exceeded original estimates.

Funding approval and conditions

The board’s unanimous vote follows a request from city officials who warned that bids for the bridge were several million dollars higher than the projected $9 million cost. The additional $1 million is contingent on the city securing the remaining funds needed to complete the project.

Project purpose and design

The Vann Family Crossing will span West Coliseum Boulevard east of Lima Road, linking the popular Pufferbelly Trail on both sides of one of Fort Wayne’s busiest thoroughfares. By providing a grade‑separated crossing, the bridge will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely without navigating street‑level traffic.

Cost pressures and private support

City officials attribute the cost increase primarily to higher prices for construction materials such as steel and concrete. The Vann family has already contributed $5 million toward the bridge, demonstrating strong private support for the project. City leaders are now seeking additional financing from state and federal sources, as well as potential private partners, to cover the remaining balance.

Timeline and next steps

Greenways and Trails Manager Dawn Ritchie told WANE 15 that the city hopes to have sufficient funding in place to award a construction contract by the end of November. If the contract is awarded on schedule, the bridge is expected to open in late 2027.

Community impact

Local residents and trail users have praised the bridge as a vital addition to Fort Wayne’s growing network of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. The project aligns with the city’s broader vision of promoting active transportation, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing safety for families and seniors who rely on the trail system.

While the additional $1 million helps bridge the financing gap, officials stress that securing the full amount remains essential to avoid further delays. The board’s approval reflects a continued commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports healthy, family‑friendly recreation and strengthens the community’s quality of life.
