Construction is underway in Algoma, Wisconsin, to replace the old break wall and improve the iconic Algoma Pierhead Light. The Army Corps of Engineers is rebuilding the entire wall, which will have sheeting encased all around it and will be filled with aggregate stone and topped with concrete.
Project Details
The project is part of a $15 million federally-funded initiative to replace the north break wall. Before the work began, the old red iconic pierhead light was removed on June 9 and is currently being repainted at Roen Salvage in Sturgeon Bay. The city owns the lighthouse and will pay about $20,000 for the painting.
City Administrator Matt Murphy says people using the harbor need to be careful, as there is currently only a pole with a light on it. However, a navigation light is in place, and the pierhead lighthouse will be returned once the painting is complete. Construction on the north break wall is expected to take a couple of years, with the pierhead lighthouse potentially being finished by September.
