Former NFL pass rusher Aldon Smith, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, spent his final day donating food to a charity that feeds the homeless in San Jose, California. Smith, 36, dropped off 10 pizzas to CHAM Deliverance Ministry, a local charity, just hours before he was found unresponsive in his car.
A Life of Football and Giving
Smith was drafted seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft and had a successful career, setting a 49ers’ franchise record with 19.5 sacks in his second season. Despite struggling with substance abuse, Smith made a comeback in 2020, playing a full season with the Dallas Cowboys.
Amir Shirazi, a friend of Smith’s, accompanied him on the charity delivery and later found him unresponsive in his car. Shirazi described Smith as a ‘very sweet, caring, loving giant’ who wanted to help the homeless.
Scott Wagers, co-founder of CHAM Deliverance Ministry, praised Smith’s generosity, saying, ‘When people like that want to help the community, that’s everything.’ Smith’s death is still under investigation, but his final act of kindness will be remembered by those who knew him.
