A vacant former brewery in Albia, Iowa, partially collapsed on Sunday, causing fire crews to expand street closures as they monitor the situation and investigate the cause. The east wall of the two-story building suddenly collapsed into an alley.
The building, located at the corner of Benton Avenue and Main Street, has been vacant for about a year. The Chamber of Commerce has been working to find a new tenant for the property, and the fire department noted that the building was not known to have significant structural issues.
Additional crumbling was observed near the top of the building, which led authorities to extend the initial closure of the alley to the entire street. Surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution, and no injuries have been reported.
