Alaska’s Next Move Program Aims to Reduce Substance Use Among Young Adults

The Alaska Department of Health has introduced a new initiative called Next Move, aimed at reducing substance use among young adults aged 18-25. This program is part of the state’s recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month and seeks to provide young Alaskans with healthy coping strategies and access to mental health resources.

Addressing Substance Use in Young Adults

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2023, substance use often begins at a young age, with alcohol and marijuana being the most common. More serious substances like opioids and stimulants typically start around age 21. The Next Move program targets this critical period to prevent substance use from escalating as young adults transition into greater independence.

The campaign’s message, “No pressure, just options,” emphasizes meeting young adults where they are and providing them with practical, non-judgmental support. By focusing on both mental health and substance use, the program encourages early intervention and informed decision-making.

Community-Driven Approach

Developed with input from young adults and community partners across Alaska, Next Move reflects real experiences and needs. The campaign provides tools, resources, and personal stories to help young adults manage stress and mental health challenges effectively.

Lindsey Kato, Director of the Division of Public Health, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Young adulthood is a time of major transition, and many people are figuring out how to cope with stress, emotions, and new responsibilities. Next Move is about offering practical support to help them take their next step.”

Encouraging Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Next Move promotes healthy coping strategies, such as connecting with others, practicing mindfulness, and seeking professional support. The program connects young adults to local and statewide resources, ensuring that support is always within reach.

The Office of Substance Misuse and Addiction Prevention, part of the Alaska Department of Health, spearheads this initiative as part of its broader mission to reduce substance misuse and addiction through prevention, education, and community-based strategies.
