Alaska Senate Primary Features Two Dan Sullivans and Former Rep. Mary Peltola

Alaska’s August 20 primary placed the state’s U.S. Senate race front and center for voters heading to the November general election. The open‑primary system listed all candidates on a single ballot, and the top four will advance to the ranked‑choice general.

Key Senate Candidates

Incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, a two‑term veteran and ally of former President Donald Trump, campaigned on expanding oil and gas development, supporting the military, and defending Trump’s tax and spending legislation. He characterized his Democratic opponent, former Rep. Mary Peltola, as aligned with “Lower 48 liberals.”

Former Rep. Mary Peltola, who won a surprise victory in 2022, ran on her “fish, family, freedom” slogan, warning that special‑interest money rigs the political system. Days before the primary, her campaign announced a staffing change, promoting a deputy to campaign manager.

A third candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, appeared on the ballot as an independent without party affiliation. He won a legal challenge to stay on the ballot after the incumbent and other Republicans claimed he was a sham candidate designed to confuse voters. Dan J. Sullivan denied the allegation, saying his candidacy stemmed from frustration with the incumbent.

Trump’s Endorsement and Voter Confusion

Former President Trump used social media to endorse Sen. Dan Sullivan, warning that the other Dan Sullivan was an attempt to trick voters and urging supporters to vote for “SULLIVAN, DAN S.” The distinction on the ballot listed the incumbent as “Dan S. Sullivan, Republican, incumbent,” while the challenger appeared as “Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., no party.” No other candidate running for re‑election received the “incumbent” label.

Other Federal Races

In Alaska’s sole U.S. House contest, Republican Rep. Nick Begich sought a second term against independent fisherman Bill Hill. Begich, also endorsed by Trump, highlighted his work ethic, while Hill emphasized affordability concerns. Progressive Democrat Matt Schultz withdrew from the race but remained on the ballot, pledging to step aside if he failed to place in the top four.

Governor’s Race and Ballot Measure

Governor Mike Dunleavy is term‑limited, leaving the governor’s race wide open. Several Republicans, including former Anchorage mayor Dave Bronson and businessperson Bernadette Wilson, entered the field, while Democrats Jonathan Kreiss‑Tomkins and Tom Begich hoped to become the first Democratic governor since 2002.

The primary also featured a single statewide initiative to reinstate campaign contribution limits. The measure would cap individual donations at $2,000 for candidates and $5,000 for political parties, and limit spending by outside groups. Supporters argue the limits curb special‑interest influence; opponents claim they infringe on free‑speech rights of contributors.

What Voters Need to Know

Alaska voters must select up to four candidates in each race, with the top four advancing to the November ranked‑choice election. The Senate race’s outcome could affect partisan control of the U.S. Senate, making the primary a focal point for national party organizations. Voters should review the ballot carefully to distinguish between the two Dan Sullivans and consider the implications of the contribution‑limit measure on future state and local elections.
