Alaska Bill Supports Healthcare Access, Not Abortion

As a pro-life advocate, April Smith understands concerns about House Bill 195, but she believes it does not authorize pharmacists to prescribe abortion-inducing drugs or perform abortions.

What HB 195 Actually Does

Both the Alaska Department of Law and the Legislature’s nonpartisan Legal Services Division concluded that HB 195 does not change Alaska’s abortion laws or expand pharmacists’ authority in that area. The bill exists within a larger effort to improve healthcare access in Alaska, particularly in rural communities.

Some have raised concerns about the potential for future changes to Alaska’s abortion laws, but these scenarios exist independently of HB 195. The Alaska Supreme Court is considering a case involving Alaska’s law limiting abortions to licensed physicians, and Planned Parenthood is challenging Alaska’s in-person requirements for medication abortions.

A Pro-Life Perspective

April Smith believes that Representative Mike Prax made the right decision in supporting HB 195, as it does not compromise pro-life convictions. She argues that if the goal is to protect unborn children, addressing the fundamental issue directly is necessary, rather than trying to address it indirectly through legislation written for another purpose.

HB 195 is part of Alaska’s Rural Health Transformation effort, supported by federal funding made available through President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill. Alaska was awarded $272 million to improve healthcare access, particularly in rural communities where shortages of healthcare providers are a daily reality.
