Alabama Secretary of State Clarifies Absentee Voting Deadlines for November Election

Alabama voters who prefer to cast their ballots by absentee ballot can breathe a sigh of relief. Secretary of State Wes Allen has confirmed that the deadlines for the upcoming November 3 General Election are exactly the same as in past years, despite the state holding four elections this calendar year.

Key Dates for Absentee Voters

According to the Alabama Votes portal on the Secretary’s website, the final date to mail an absentee ballot application is Tuesday, October 27. Those who wish to submit their application in person must do so by Thursday, October 29. Once an application is approved, voters have two options for returning their completed ballot:

  • In‑person return: Must be delivered to the county absentee election manager by the close of business on Monday, November 2, the day before Election Day.
  • Mail return: Must be received by the county absentee election manager by noon on Election Day, November 3.

Allen advises voters to mail both their applications and completed ballots at least two weeks before the respective deadlines whenever possible, to avoid any last‑minute complications.

Photo Identification Requirement

In line with Alabama’s commitment to election integrity, the Secretary stresses that every voter—whether voting in person or by absentee ballot—must present a valid form of photo identification. This requirement helps safeguard a fair and honest election, a principle that the administration consistently upholds.

Why the Clarification Matters

With three prior elections this year—including a primary, a primary runoff, and a special primary—some voters have expressed confusion about whether new rules apply to the November General Election. Allen’s clarification makes it clear that the process remains unchanged, reinforcing confidence in the state’s election system.

Alabama’s voter rolls list 3,833,470 registered voters. While primary turnout was historically low, the General Election traditionally draws two to three times that number, both at polling places and through absentee ballots. Clear guidance helps ensure that the surge in participation proceeds smoothly.

Where to Find More Information

Voters seeking forms, detailed instructions, or contact information can visit the official Alabama Votes website. The site provides downloadable absentee ballot applications, a list of acceptable photo IDs, and answers to frequently asked questions.

By adhering to the established deadlines and identification requirements, Alabama voters can help maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that every eligible voice is heard on November 3.
