Alabama Lawmaker Pushes to Block Federal Funding of Elective Abortions and Urges Voters to Guard Trump Policies

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of Rightside Media.

What would you do if a federal program unintentionally funded something you fundamentally oppose? That question set the tone when Representative Robert Aderholt joined the Rightside Media conversation, ready to tackle a Medicaid loophole that could channel U.S. taxpayer money into elective abortions.

Balancing Auburn and Alabama: A Representative’s Local Roots

Before diving into policy, Aderholt lightened the mood with a classic Alabama rivalry. “I represent half of Tuscaloosa,” he joked, noting his delicate balance between supporting Auburn and Alabama. The comment underscored his connection to the state’s two flagship universities, a reminder that even federal lawmakers remain rooted in the communities they serve.

He added, “I try to support them both any way I can from a federal standpoint,” emphasizing that his legislative work often touches both campuses, whether through research funding, infrastructure grants, or student aid programs.

Medicaid, the GAO Report, and the Fight to Reinstate the Hyde Amendment

The conversation quickly turned to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that highlighted a troubling gap: a quarter of qualified health plans on the ACA exchanges were allegedly funding elective abortions, despite the Hyde Amendment’s prohibition on federal money for such procedures. Aderholt explained, “Federal dollars are not supposed to go for elective abortions. The only exception is life of the mother, rape, and incest.” He noted that the ACA’s structure allowed some plans to bypass the appropriations process, creating a loophole the law did not clearly close.

Calling the situation “unacceptable,” the congressman urged the Trump administration to act fast. “We’re asking the administration to issue a new rule and reinstate a separate payment rule to remedy this,” he said, stressing that Congress moves slowly and immediate protection of taxpayer dollars is essential.

AI Regulation: A Cautious Approach Without Overreach

Switching gears, the hosts asked Aderholt about the recent surge of alarm bells surrounding artificial intelligence. While admitting he isn’t an expert, he expressed confidence that the United States should avoid heavy-handed regulation that could disadvantage American innovators against foreign competitors. “I don’t want to put too much government regulation to tie ourselves here in the U.S. if China and other countries are not going to abide by it,” he remarked.

He warned against extreme scenarios, acknowledging the need for some oversight: “You don’t want to create something that will try to obliterate every living person in the world,” yet he cautioned that the industry itself often lacks a clear vision of its own goals, making rapid legislative action premature.

Election Outlook: Mobilizing Voters to Protect Trump Policies

With the 2024 midterms fresh in memory, Aderholt turned his attention to the upcoming November 3rd election. He highlighted a stark gender gap in voter turnout, noting that 8.7 million more women voted in 2024 than men, and that women tend to lean about ten points toward Democrats. “We need to get men out to vote,” he urged, framing the race as a battle to preserve the Trump administration’s agenda.

He warned that a Democratic takeover of either the House or the Senate could stall or reverse key policies, especially those championed by President Trump. “If the Democrats control either chamber, it will pretty much come to a screeching halt all the policies that President Trump wants to do,” Aderholt cautioned, emphasizing the importance of a slim Republican majority in the House.

Adoption Advocacy: A Bipartisan Effort

Closing the discussion, the hosts praised Aderholt’s personal involvement with Lifeline Children’s Services, noting his experience with adoption through the organization. He revealed he chairs the Congressional Adoption Caucus, a bipartisan group that includes both Republican and Democratic co‑chairs in the House and Senate. “We work together to support policies that encourage adoption, whether international or domestic,” he said, illustrating a rare area of cross‑party cooperation.

The congressman’s commitment to adoption dovetails with his broader pro‑life stance, reinforcing his message that protecting life starts at home and extends to federal policy.

Overall, Representative Aderholt’s remarks painted a picture of a lawmaker deeply attuned to his Alabama constituents while navigating complex national issues. By urging swift administrative action on Medicaid funding, advocating a balanced approach to AI, and rallying voters to safeguard the Trump administration’s agenda, he offered a clear roadmap for Alabamians who want to see their values reflected in Washington.

As the November election approaches, the stakes he outlined—protecting taxpayer dollars, preserving technological leadership, and maintaining a Republican foothold in Congress—remain front‑and‑center for voters across the state.
