Alabama Governor Ivey is distributing $6.3 million in grants to 12 local community organizations to help low-income households improve the energy efficiency of their homes through the Weatherization Assistance Program.
Program Details
The program is designed to reduce home energy costs while improving safety and comfort, with priority given to households that include older adults, people with disabilities, and families with children. The funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Four West Alabama organizations are receiving grants: Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission, Community Action Agency of South Alabama, Community Action Partnership of North Alabama Inc., and Community Service Programs of West Alabama Inc.
According to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, homes that qualify for assistance will receive an energy audit to identify the most cost-effective improvements. Eligible upgrades may include adding insulation, sealing air leaks around doors and windows, and other measures intended to reduce heating and cooling costs.
