Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Alabama Crimson Tide’s defensive staff is emphasizing mental preparation for freshman safety Jireh Edwards, who is recovering from a practice injury that required surgery. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack explained that the team wants Edwards to stay involved in meetings and walkthroughs so he can return both physically and mentally ready to contribute.
Coaches stress the mental‑physical connection
“The challenge is when you physically can do it, are you mentally in position to execute quickly?” Wommack said on Wednesday. “We’re trying to bridge that gap and narrow that margin as best as possible.” He added that if a player returns to the field without staying engaged in the team’s mental preparation, additional weeks may be needed for the player to get fully up to speed.
Edwards, a former five‑star safety prospect, was already participating in the team’s defensive meetings on Wednesday morning, just two days after his surgery. The coaching staff praised his dedication, noting that his love for the game makes it easier for them to keep him focused.
Plan for a quick on‑field return
Wommack said the Tide will look to get Edwards on the field as soon as his health permits, using him in specific defensive packages once he is cleared. “He’s obsessed with the game of football, so I probably don’t have to keep my thumb on him,” the coach remarked. “He’s already out there doing those things, and when he gets back we’ll want to get him on the field as quickly as possible because he will be a very productive player on our defense.”
Alabama’s fall camp continues with its 18th practice scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27. The Crimson Tide are set to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 5, with kickoff slated for 11:00 a.m.
