Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Alabama football program confirmed its quarterback depth chart for the upcoming season on Thursday, naming sophomore Keelon Russell the starter for the 2026 campaign. The decision was announced by head coach Kalen DeBoer, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis on the team’s official X account.
Russell earns the nod over senior Austin Mack
Russell, a 6‑foot‑3, 207‑pound native of Duncanville, Texas, earned the starting role after a competitive offseason that saw him battle senior quarterback Austin Mack. Last season, Russell appeared in two games, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while posting a 72.7 QBR. He also contributed three rushes for 17 yards.
During his senior year at Duncanville High School in 2024, Russell posted a 69.4 percent completion rate, threw for 4,177 yards, and accounted for 55 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He also added 321 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 33 carries.
Coaches praise Russell’s playmaking ability
Quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis told the Crimson Tide’s NIL collective, Yea Alabama, “Keelon is gonna be the starting quarterback here because he’s a playmaker. He’s the guy that we know when the ball is in his hands, a lot of good things can happen.” The coaching staff highlighted Russell’s poise in the pocket and his ability to extend plays as key factors in the decision.
What’s next for the Tide
Alabama will resume practice on Sunday, Aug. 23, marking the 14th day of fall camp. The team is slated to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 5, with kickoff scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
