U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer won the Republican nomination for Alabama’s House District 6 seat, and will face Democratic nominee Maurice Mercer in November. Palmer, who was first elected to Congress in 2015, emphasized the need for a renewed sense of patriotism and love for America.
In the U.S. House District 7 seat, Republican Ammie Akin was selected to challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell. Akin, who is running for public office for the first time, said she looks forward to sharing a new vision for the district in Congress.
Primary Election Results
In the special election, turnout was low, with just 5.24% of eligible voters casting ballots. The election was held following a Supreme Court ruling that allowed Alabama to change its congressional district map.
Palmer, who co-founded the Alabama Policy Institute, won over 80% of the vote in his primary against Case Nixon. Mercer, a former Pelham City Councilman, won the Democratic nomination with 64.17% of the vote.
Akin won the Republican nomination for District 7 with 73.37% of the vote, and will face Rep. Sewell in November. The general election is set for November 3.
