Akron is introducing a new approval process for data centers, citing concerns over health and energy use. The city planning commission has passed a proposal that would require data centers to obtain a special, conditional use permit to build.
Concerns Over Health and Energy Use
Abigail Drennen, a resident of Highland Square, supports the initiative, citing concerns over the potential health impacts of data centers, including increased instances of asthma or hypertension. She also worries about higher energy use and the negative effect on people’s mental health.
The planning commission’s proposal would require data centers to provide information on electric and water use, perform a noise study, and provide information on proximity to residences and any backup electric supply. The potential developer would also be required to cover the costs of any studies or consultants needed to determine the appropriateness of a proposal.
Next Steps
A public hearing will be held on July 27 in City Council chambers, where residents can convey their support or opposition to the measure. The city will continue to look at what other governments are doing to respond to data centers and may explicitly limit data centers near schools or parks in the future.
