Akron Men in 60s, 70s Stay Active with Basketball

Akron men in their 60s and 70s are proving that age is just a number when it comes to staying active and healthy. Lance Bell, who turns 68 next month, is one of them. He plays basketball regularly and says it’s about more than just the game – it’s about maintaining his physical conditioning and having fun.

Staying Active, Staying Healthy

Bell and his teammates, including Rudy Murry and Bart Skinner, participated in the first-ever 60-and-up game at the Hoop for Coop Men’s Health Fair and Basketball Tip Off. The event, which was organized by Jerome Moss, curator of the Hoop for Coop tournament and executive director of Guys & Gals Community Partnership, aims to promote health and wellness among men in the community.

For these men, playing basketball is not just about competition – it’s about staying active, having fun, and enjoying life. As Murry, 62, said, ‘We’re not trying to hurt one another. Yeah, we do get competitive a little bit, but we just want to enjoy it and enjoy life.’

The Hoop for Coop event also included a health fair, which provided an opportunity for men to learn about healthy living and wellness. The event is an example of how community-based initiatives can promote health and wellness among older adults.
