Southwest Airlines has reignited a debate on air travel etiquette after joking in a social media post that passengers who stand up immediately after landing “won’t get off the plane faster.” The post sparked a fierce backlash, with some travelers arguing that standing up is inconsiderate, while others claim it’s necessary for comfort and to prepare to deplane.
Etiquette Expert Weighs In
Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert based in Texas, says that passengers who stand immediately after landing can be a source of frustration for other travelers. “With long flights, people are anxious to stand up and stretch their legs,” Gottsman said. “They also want to get their suitcases out of the bins and be prepared to efficiently walk out of their aisle.” However, problems arise when passengers step into the aisle too early, block others, or encroach on the limited personal space inside the cabin.
Many commenters argued that standing after landing is not the issue, but rather passengers should wait their turn and avoid pushing ahead of others. One commenter wrote, “I stand up immediately and politely grab my stuff and get ready to deplane. I don’t push in front of people and try not to be in others’ way. I wait for rows in front of me to get off.”
