Air Force C‑5 Galaxy Touches Down at Cheyenne Regional Airport

Residents and aviation enthusiasts in Cheyenne were treated to a rare sight on Wednesday when a Lockheed C‑5 Galaxy, the United States Air Force’s largest strategic airlifter, touched down on the city’s long runway. The aircraft arrived from Dover Air Force Base and was photographed from several angles by local hobbyists and the Legend AeroServe Facebook page.

Why the C‑5 Galaxy Matters

The C‑5 Galaxy measures 248 feet in length, 65 feet in height, and boasts a wingspan of nearly 223 feet. Its five landing‑gear sets, with a total of 28 wheels, allow it to operate on runways like those at Cheyenne Regional and Casper/Natrona County Airport. The plane can carry up to 840,000 pounds of cargo, enough for two M1 Abrams tanks or multiple helicopters, and its internal bay is roughly 144 × 19 × 13 feet.

Fuel capacity tops out at 51,150 U.S. gallons, and the aircraft consumes about 4,800 gallons per flight hour under standard cruise conditions. Despite its size, pilots report that the Galaxy “floats” down the runway, creating an optical illusion that it hovers rather than flies.

Local Aviation Highlights

While the C‑5 was the headline attraction, the day also featured a MiG‑29 stop at the Casper/Natrona County Airport for refueling after returning from the 2025 Oshkosh Airshow. The privately owned jet, like the historic MiG‑15 trainers displayed at the Good Aviation & Veterans Museum in Casper, underscores Wyoming’s deep ties to both military and civilian aviation history.

Ed Good, who runs the museum, continues to preserve his father Jim Good’s legacy—an inductee of Wyoming’s Aviation Hall of Fame—by showcasing aircraft, trophies, and educational programs for school groups and the public. Visits to the museum are free, and the organization welcomes tours, video presentations, and hands‑on learning experiences.

Community Impact

The C‑5 landing highlights the strategic importance of Cheyenne’s airport infrastructure, which supports both commercial traffic and critical military operations. Local officials have long advocated for maintaining runway length and strength to accommodate such large aircraft, ensuring the region remains a vital hub for national defense logistics.

For aviation fans, the event offered a chance to photograph a piece of U.S. military capability up close, while also reminding residents of the broader role Wyoming plays in supporting the nation’s airlift capacity.
