AI tools to help schools assess academic and soft‑skill progress

Legend.org, a New York‑based education technology firm, announced that it will provide artificial‑intelligence tools to the 400 public and private schools that belong to the Mastery Transcript Consortium. The AI platform lets teachers upload digital files or photos of handwritten assignments, then evaluates each piece against the standards a school chooses.

How the AI works

According to co‑founder Matt Sornson, the system can analyze written papers, recorded presentations, artwork, music and other student artifacts. For example, the AI can assess communication skills by examining tone of voice, body language, posture and eye contact in video presentations. In visual‑arts assignments it can evaluate composition, technical execution, use of materials, visual communication and originality. For music, it can judge rhythm, pitch and intonation.

Sornson emphasized that the AI does not assign final grades. It performs a first pass of rubric assessment, highlighting areas where students should focus their efforts, while the teacher retains final decision‑making authority.

Benefits for teachers and students

Consortium founder Scott Looney, head of the private Hawken School in Cleveland, Ohio, said the technology could dramatically reduce the time teachers spend grading and provide immediate, actionable feedback. By summarizing progress across dozens of academic and soft‑skill indicators, the AI helps students build portfolios that showcase growth in communication, collaboration, critical thinking and other competencies.

Looney envisions a future where students can submit work directly to the platform for suggestions before turning it in to a teacher, and where colleges or employers could upload their own skill standards for the AI to apply.

Transparency and safeguards

Researchers and educators caution that AI grading must be transparent and free of bias. Amanda Hirsch, assistant director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Northern Illinois University, warned that schools should clearly explain how AI is used and keep humans in the loop for important decisions.

Legend.org’s tools are designed to work with any set of standards a school adopts, whether they come from ETS, the Carnegie Foundation, Pathsmith, the XQ Institute or a school‑developed framework. The company plans to pilot the AI in select Mastery schools while other consortium members evaluate the offering.

Looking ahead

While the Mastery Transcript Consortium recently sold its nonprofit model to Legend.org, the partnership retains advisory input from former ETS and Carnegie leaders. The rollout of AI‑enhanced assessment aims to make portfolio‑based reporting more efficient and to give students clearer insight into their skill development, supporting both educators and future college or employer reviewers.
