A recent study by WebFX analyzed nearly 600,000 AI sessions across 2,500 URLs to determine which content investments are most likely to improve visibility and drive website traffic. The findings provide a practical blueprint for businesses to prioritize content and earn more visibility, website traffic, and customers from AI search.
Key Findings
The data revealed that homepages generated the largest share of AI traffic, accounting for 31.3% of all AI sessions. Product pages, service pages, blog articles, and FAQ/resource pages followed, accounting for 16.8%, 11.4%, 11.3%, and 7.2% of AI traffic, respectively. These “big five” page types accounted for more than two-thirds of all AI traffic in the dataset.
The study also found that AI rewards comprehensive websites, with the highest-performing websites building a portfolio of content that answers different questions and supports different stages of the customer journey. Additionally, the data showed that AI traffic converts 1.2 times higher than traditional organic search, suggesting that AI is increasingly connecting businesses with customers who have already moved beyond initial research and are actively comparing options, evaluating providers, and preparing to make a decision.
Implications for Businesses
The study’s findings have important implications for businesses looking to grow their online presence and drive website traffic. By prioritizing content that supports evaluation and decision-making, such as product pages, service pages, and FAQ/resource pages, businesses can increase their visibility and attract more customers. Furthermore, the study suggests that businesses should focus on building a comprehensive website with a range of content that answers different questions and supports different stages of the customer journey.
