Artificial intelligence is approaching, and in some cases exceeding, doctors’ ability to make accurate diagnoses. However, when it comes to deciding how to manage a patient’s health condition, doctors are still better at weighing treatment options.
Diagnosis vs. Management
A recent study found that AI can diagnose complex health issues with a high degree of accuracy, but it is not as effective at determining the best course of treatment. This is because diagnosis is only half of a doctor’s job, and the other half is knowing what to do about it.
Experienced doctors use mental shortcuts called illness scripts to match a patient’s symptoms with a particular disease or condition. While AI can also use pattern-matching to diagnose health issues, it is not as effective at considering the nuances of a patient’s individual circumstances and values.
The Human Advantage
Doctors bring a human touch to the diagnosis and treatment process, taking into account a patient’s unique needs and values. For example, a doctor might consider a patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and personal preferences when deciding on a course of treatment.
In contrast, AI is limited to providing a diagnosis based on patterns in the data, without considering the individual patient’s circumstances. This is why doctors are still essential in the diagnosis and treatment process, and why AI should be seen as a tool to support doctors, rather than replace them.
