Afternoon Light, Ancient Trees, and a Victorian’s Last Stand: Lake Forest Cemetery Has Redefined My Idea of a Bridgeport Walk

There is a building in Bridgeport that smells like sawdust and varnish and something older — something you cannot quite name but immediately recognize as belonging to a different, slower century. It sits inside Beardsley Park, tucked behind a modest brick facade that most people drive past without a second glance. Step through the doors of the Beardsley Park Carousel, though, and the whole pace of your afternoon changes.

Built in 1878 by the legendary Charles I.D. Looff — the same craftsman responsible for the original Coney Island carousel — this machine is among the oldest operating merry-go-rounds in the United States. That is not promotional language. That is a verifiable, astonishing fact. The carved wooden horses, each one hand-painted in colors that feel somehow both faded and electric, have been spinning on this same platform for well over a hundred years. Running your hand along one of those flanks, you feel every coat of paint that came before yours.

The carousel lives in a dedicated pavilion near the park’s main entrance off Noble Avenue in the North End of Bridgeport. Parking is easy, the grounds are clean and well-maintained, and the whole setting manages to feel festive without being chaotic. On a weekend afternoon in late spring or early fall — my personal favorite times to visit — the carousel draws a lovely cross-section of the city: grandparents lifting toddlers onto painted stallions, teenagers who came to be ironic and stayed because it is genuinely magical, couples on easy dates who were smart enough to skip the expensive restaurant for something they will actually remember.

A ride costs just a couple of dollars, which is almost offensive given what you get. The calliope music — real, mechanical, not a digital approximation — fills the pavilion with the kind of sound that makes time feel porous. You hear it and your shoulders drop about two inches. The horses rise and fall in their classic cadence, and for three minutes you are briefly released from whatever weight you carried in.

What makes this carousel culturally significant beyond its age is the restoration story behind it. Local preservationists, the city of Bridgeport, and dedicated volunteers fought hard to keep this machine operational across decades of tight municipal budgets and shifting priorities. The fact that it still runs is a small miracle of civic stubbornness, and riding it feels like participating in that act of preservation in the most direct way possible.

If you have children in your life — nieces, nephews, your own kids, borrowed kids, the neighbor’s kids — bring them here. But also come alone, or with a friend who appreciates beautiful old things. The Beardsley Park Carousel does not need childhood nostalgia to work its effect. It just needs you to buy a ticket and climb on.

The carousel typically operates on weekends from spring through early fall, with some weekday hours during peak summer months. Check the city’s parks department page before you go for the current schedule. Then go.
