Africa’s soccer scene is on the rise, with nine out of 10 competing African nations advancing to the knockout stages in the 2026 World Cup. Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo, who played every minute of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign, shared his thoughts on the continent’s success.
African Football Evolution
Semenyo believes that Africa’s record-breaking outing in the tournament is a testament to the continent’s evolving football scene. He recalled playing against Cape Verde in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and being impressed by their skills.
The 26-year-old player, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, has had an unconventional rise to soccer’s elite. Despite facing early rejections, Semenyo persevered and eventually earned a move to Manchester City from AFC Bournemouth in January.
Representing Ghana
Semenyo takes pride in representing Ghana and is grateful for the love and support he receives from his fans. He hopes to inspire young players and be a role model for them, just like his own idols, Tony Yeboah and Asamoah Gyan.
With a new manager, Enzo Maresca, at the helm of Manchester City, Semenyo is optimistic about the team’s chances of winning domestic and European trophies. He praised Maresca’s attention to detail and believes that the team is buying into his tactics.
