Aerial treatments to begin on 11,000 acres of South Sugarloaf burn scar in Nevada

The Humboldt‑Toiyabe National Forest, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), announced that aerial fire‑rehabilitation treatments will commence during the last week of August on the South Sugarloaf burn scar. The effort targets roughly 11,000 acres within the Mountain City Ranger District, specifically the Bull Run and Independence Mountains near Maggie Summit Road, Trail Creek Road, and the Cobb Creek area.

Goal: Reduce invasive cheatgrass and restore native vegetation

Cheatgrass, an invasive, non‑native weed, spreads quickly after fire and outcompetes native sagebrush and other plant communities. By applying a targeted herbicide from the air, the agencies aim to suppress cheatgrass growth, giving native species a chance to re‑establish. “The Forest Service, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, is taking proactive steps to restore the South Sugarloaf burn scars,” said Wendy Markham, deputy district ranger for the Mountain City‑Ruby Mountains‑Jarbidge Ranger District. “Healthy native vegetation is essential for building resilient landscapes and supporting the rich wildlife habitat that Nevadans value.”

Phase one of a broader restoration plan

The aerial application marks the first phase of a multi‑year restoration strategy. After herbicide treatment, the Forest Service and NDOW will reseed priority sites with native seed mixes designed to promote long‑term recovery of sagebrush, grasses, and other key plant communities. The agencies also plan to protect sensitive riparian zones, aiming to improve water quality, fish habitat, and wildlife movement corridors.

Collaboration under the Nevada Shared Stewardship Agreement

This project is part of the Nevada Shared Stewardship Agreement, a landscape‑scale partnership signed in 2019. Signatories include the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Nevada Department of Agriculture, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The agreement commits participating agencies to work across federal, state, tribal, and private lands to manage wildfire risk, restore fire‑adapted ecosystems, and enhance overall landscape resilience.

What visitors should expect

Hunters, hikers, and other recreationists are advised to stay alert for temporary closures or low‑altitude flight activity in the treatment area. Posted notices will provide the latest information, and visitors can contact the Mountain City Ranger District for updates. The agencies stress that safety measures are in place to minimize disruption while the work proceeds.

Recent progress in the region

The upcoming treatment follows the recent completion of operations covering about 13,000 acres in the South Rubies area, another portion of the Mountain City Ranger District affected by the 2023 fire season. Together, these efforts represent a coordinated response to the increasing frequency of high‑severity wildfires that have challenged Nevada’s natural resources and public lands.

Local landowners and outdoor enthusiasts have expressed support for the restoration work, noting that healthy native vegetation not only preserves Nevada’s scenic beauty but also safeguards water supplies and wildlife that many families rely on for hunting, fishing, and recreation.

As the aerial treatments get underway, the Forest Service and NDOW will continue to monitor progress, adjust seed mixes as needed, and engage with community stakeholders to ensure the long‑term health of the South Sugarloaf landscape.
