Ada County Hosts Special Olympics Torch Run, Celebrating Inclusion and Community

The Ada County community came together to celebrate the Special Olympics through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an event that has been raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes since its inception in 1981 by retired Chief Richard LaMunyon. This year, the torch run began in Bonners Ferry on May 11, making its way through eastern and north Idaho, across the Magic Valley, and through Mountain Home before arriving in Ada County on May 27.

The event, which has generated over $900 million worldwide, aims to support athletes with disabilities, promoting inclusion and community engagement. Attendees of all ages were encouraged to participate, regardless of skill level, to enjoy various sports and meet law enforcement officers involved in the torch run.

Community Leaders Highlight the Event’s Impact

Special Olympics Idaho CEO Kristi Kraft, Idaho Governor Brad Little, and Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue were among the speakers at the event’s kickoff on Wednesday morning. Governor Little expressed his honor in participating alongside the athletes and law enforcement officers, emphasizing the event’s role in shining a light on inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all.

Governor Little stated, “Your efforts help shine a light on inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all. You are the heart of this movement. Your determination, courage, spirit, inspire all of us and remind us what it truly means to compete, and belong.”

Sheriff Donahue, described as a “champion of the mission” by the organization, highlighted the event’s focus on building relationships and creating opportunities. “It’s about building relationships, creating opportunities, and standing beside some of the most inspiring athletes you will ever meet,” he said.

Upcoming Events and Celebrations

The final leg of the torch run is set to begin on Friday at 11 a.m., starting at the Canyon County Courthouse. Another run will commence in Nampa at 4:30 p.m. at Centennial Elementary School. These runs will lead into the opening ceremony of the State Summer Games, featuring Idaho’s Special Olympics athletes, further celebrating the spirit of competition and community.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics continues to be a beacon of community spirit, fostering a sense of belonging and support for athletes across Idaho and beyond.
