When the “Blacklist” star Jonathan Holtzman and his wife Ali Margolies settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they began looking for a dog to join their family. Their search led them to the Española Humane shelter, where they first met a trembling puppy named Avocado.
A change of heart on the road
During their initial visit, the couple sensed the shelter’s professionalism and caring staff. Holtzman said, “As soon as we went there, we were like, ‘OK, no matter what or when, we’re getting our puppy from here.’” Yet Avocado’s shy demeanor made them pause. They left the shelter to think it over, only to turn the car around a few minutes later, fearing they would lose the chance to adopt her.
Adjusting to a new home
Back at their Santa Fe home, Avocado quickly shed her shyness. She leapt into her water bowl, escaped her pen, and even tried to chew on rocks in the gravel yard. The couple says she is gaining confidence each day and hopes to take her on hikes and other outdoor adventures.
Family’s first moments with Avocado
When Holtzman introduced Avocado to the camera for the first time, she fell asleep in his arms, staying calm throughout the interview. “She’s playing the role very well,” he joked, calling her the “perfect doggy.”
Holtzman and Margolies view the adoption as a reminder of the importance of giving rescued animals a second chance. They encourage others in the community to consider adopting from local shelters.
